WannaCry Ransomware Security Recommendation

Release Date: 05/15/2017

In light of the recent WannaCrypt, or WannaCry, ransomware issues, we would like to share a couple recommendations:

Recommendations:

1. If anyone is running the following OS from your local workstations, please install the patch below (link at the end of this article).
  • Client OS: windows XP or older
  • Server OS: windows 2003 server or older
2. Please do not open any attachment from people you don't know. Please do not open any attachment from people you know either if you aren't expecting emails from them. If you aren't sure, please verify with the other party first.

The WannaCry ransomware outbreak during the week of 5/8/2017 had affected over 200,000 computers worldwide.  It mostly affected the older computers like Windows XP and 2003.  The outbreak has been stopped because of a kill switch discovered by security experts. It is likely that similar ransomware can exploit the same weakness in Windows XP and 2003 to make similar attacks in the future.  Therefore, if you are using older, unsupported versions of the OS, you should patch your system to protect against possible future attacks.

Patch

"Microsoft took an unusual step to protect its customers with an unsupported version of Windows — including Windows XP, Vista, Windows 8, Server 2003 and 2008 "
