SYMENU System Manager Introduction 1

Introduction

Welcome!

The Elliott System Manager manual provides information on how to install and set up your Elliott System, features found in all the Elliott packages, and utilities located on the Util_Setup pull-down menu on the Elliott main menu.

While this manual is designed as a reference tool to assist new users learning to use Elliott, it is important for you to be familiar with the information here before actually running the software.  This will prevent many problems and reduce the time it takes to solve any that may occur.  While the volume of documentation that arrived with your Elliott system may appear overwhelming, much of it is meant to be used mainly during troubleshooting.  Take a few minutes to read through the sections of this book and you will be rewarded with much smoother sailing later on.

Before You Get Started

The following checklist is provided as a tool to guide you through the installation and configuration of your new Elliott Software.  As you become familiar with your system, and wish to increase the benefits to your company, please refer to the additional sections of all your manuals.

What You Have Received

You should have received a program CD,  a registration diskette (excluded if Demo was purchased) and the latest release notes.  Help, user manuals for all packages and other documentation are included on the CD.  If any of the above is missing, contact your Elliott reseller or the NETcellent System Inc.  Customer Service Department at (888) 595-3818.

For specific instructions on installing your Elliott Software, see the Initial Startup Checklist that follows this outline.

I.                     Setup hardware and operating system.

Make sure your hardware meets the minimum requirements specified in the Hardware Requirements section of this manual.  Set up your operating system, network, and file handling software according to the specifications in this individual package manual.

II.                   Install the Elliott Software.

Follow the Initial Startup Checklist to install the Elliott programs, help, tutorial, and registration files.

III.                  Enter Company Setup information.

This setup will be done automatically if you create a new company and specify the module and drive letter for each module before you startup the company.  However, if you choose to turn on additional modules in the future, then you will need to initialize the individual package files using the File Utilities application. (This should be done for your company files only, not in the Tutorial Company!)

V.                  Enter package setup information.

Enter each package’s Setup application and tailor how the package should function to your company’s needs.

VI.                Key in maintenance application in each package and enter your company’s data (i.e. customers, inventory, etc.).

Overview

Operating Systems

Elliott V7.00 is a Windows 32-Bit application and currently supports the following operating systems:

Client

            Windows 98

            Windows ME

            Windows NT 4.0

            Windows 2000

            Windows XP

Networks

            Novell Netware 3.2

            Novell Netware 4.x

            Novell Netware 5.x

            MS Windows NT 4.0

            MS Windows 2000

            MS Windows 2003

            MS Windows XP

Peer-To-Peer Network with no more than 3 users

Windows NT/2000/XP

An Elliott application performance on a Windows NT/2000/XP workstation is significantly faster than on a Windows 98/ME workstation.  This has to do with the fact Windows NT/2000/XP is a true 32-bit operating system while 98/ME is a 32-bit operating system built on top of 16-bit architecture.  Also, Elliott is much more reliable when running on Windows NT, 2000 or XP.  For report printing, it is up to 50% faster than a Windows 98 workstation.  The screen refresh speed is probably even more.

Some of the problems related to Windows 2000/XP have to do with the way it changes how user groups work.  Specifically, when you start Elliott, the system will attempt to update the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry in your computer where the PSQL Microkernel routing is set.  If the setting to use Requester or Local engine is different between EL700.CFG’s setting, Elliott will update the local registry to be the same as EL700.CFG.  Elliott is not able to update the local HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry with Windows 2000/XP if you do not have power user privileges.  This may cause problems for the PSQL client.  However, this is not a problem for power users and we suggest that you always log in as a power user in a Windows 2000/XP environment.

Hardware Requirements

PC Pentium II 100 Mhz with 64 Meg RAM.  To run a fully installed Elliott Ver. 7.00 you will need 300 MB of hard drive disk space.  Pervasive may have other requirements and you should review these to see if they exceed the requirements listed here.

Installation Directory

By default, Elliott installs to a “C:\ELLIOTT7” directory.  However, you have the option to install to any directory.  If you are in a network environment, we suggest you install Elliott on a network drive so all users can share the same directory for Elliott.  This will simplify your update and upgrade process as you will only need to update one directory that applies to all users.  In a network installation, there is no local client (DLLs) required to be installed on your local hard drive.  The only requirement to setup a workstation to work with a network-installed version of Elliott is to set up a desktop shortcut.

Licensing Issues

For Elliott Business Software users, there are no special licensing requirements other than the number of users.  The system counts each concurrent workstation using Elliott as one user; no matter how many sessions that workstation may open.  Elliott V7 can run simultaneously with Elliott V6.7.  However, the Elliott V6.7 users who access the system will be counted as a user as well.  Therefore, your user license count should be the total number of users for Elliott V6.7 and Elliott V7.0.

The Elliott Version 7 License is named ELIREG70.DAT and must be copied into your startup directory (i.e. F:\ELLIOTT7).  Without this license present, the system operates in demonstration mode with certain limitations imposed.
