PSQL Download and Installation with Video
Version: 7.x & Up
Elliott Business Software depends on the PSQL database engine. Our latest version, Elliott 8.6, requires either PSQL 13 or 15. In this article, we are going to show you how to download and install the PSQL database engine. We will also discuss a few things you should be aware of after installing PSQL.
Download PSQL
- To download the PSQL for installation, please go to the https://www.actian.com website.
- Choose the "Download" link on the top right corner.
- In the Production dropdown, choose "Actian Zen (PSQL)."
- In the Release dropdown, choose the latest version of "PSQL 13" or "PSQL 15." For PSQL version requirements for various Elliott releases, see this KB article: https://support.elliott.com/knowledgebase/articles/810633-psql-version-required-by-each-elliott-version
- In the Platform dropdown, choose "Windows x86 32/64-bits."
- Choose "Apply Filter."
- Click on the appropriate package to download.
Type of Download
You can find the following types of installation packages to download:
- Enterprise Server - Enterprise Server license by users. This is the default type of servers to work with Elliott Business Software.
- Cloud Server - Cloud Server is also called the Vx server. In some situations, we may sell you the Cloud server. But unless we specifically tell you so, you should download the Enterprise Server.
- Report Engine - This is free with your PSQL engine. You can use it to release server burden for database activities from, for example, Crystal Reports.
- Client - You need to install PSQL client on each workstation that needs to run Elliott Business Software.
Installation
The PSQL database engine needs to be installed on the server. PSQL client needs to be installed on each workstation that needs to run Elliott Business Software. On the server, please make sure of the following:
- You need to login as admin or admin equivalent user.
- Install the main release first.
- Then install the patch.
- The server engine comes with a 30-day free trial. You can choose to authorize your product key at the end of installation, or use "License Administrator" within the next 30 days.
After Installation
We suggest that you find "PSQL Control Center & Documentation" and place it on your desktop or pin it to your task bar for easy accessibility. In addition, you need to do the following:
Remove "Limit Segment Size to 2GB"
In PSQL Control Center, right click on your server name and choose "Properties." In performance tuning, uncheck the option "Limit Segment Size to 2GB."
Change Btrieve Security to use "Mixed Mode"
In PSQL Control Center, under the server, database, find "DEFAULTDB" and right click to choose "Properties." Under security, change "Btrieve Security" from "Classic" mode to "Mixed." This is to prepare you for implementing Elliott NTFS security and make sure your database is safe even when under ransomware attack. For more details, see this KB article:
License Administrator
- If you did not authorize PSQL engine during the installation, you need to authorize it before the end of the 30-day free trial period.
- If you move your database server, you need to deauthorize the license from your old server and re-authorize it on the new server.
