Issues with Running Elliott Locally for Windows User ID with Spaces

Release Date: 07/17/2024
Version: 8.6

Starting with Elliott 8.5, we encourage Elliott users to run Elliott from a local profile folder like C:\Users\User-ID\AppData\.....  This method resolves the security limitations imposed by Windows OS where users run Elliott directly from a network mapped drive.

When the run local solution was first developed, we assumed the Windows "User-ID" would not contain spaces.  For example, the user-id "Edward" would work well.  But the user-id "Edward Kwang" would not work well.  You may run into various issues like:
  • Receive Message "File does not exist."
  • Receive Message "Payware interface is not installed."
  • Report Desk does not run.
This is because the function we used does not work well when the file path contains spaces, such as "C:\Users\Edward Kwang\...."

See sample screen below:

While this issue still exists in Elliott 8.5, we just addressed this issue with the latest Elliott version 8.6.

If you run into this issue, below are your options:
  1. Upgrade to the latest Elliott 8.6.
  2. Do not create a Windows User ID with spaces.
  3. Instead of using the "Run Local" mode, use the "Run Hybrid" option. That is to say, you can create a local folder like "C:\Elliott" and use EL850 or EL860.EXE to create the local desktop icon.  Instead of using the default local user profile path, point to this local folder that does not have any spaces.
