Should I Install the 32-bit or 64-bit Outlook/Office?

Modified Date: 09/26/2023
Version: 7.5 - 8.2

Q - I have just installed Windows 10 on my computer.  Now I am about to install Microsoft Office 2013.  I have the option of installing either 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64).  Which one should I install?

A - Elliott V7.5 interacts with Outlook through MAPI.  Elliott V8.0 uses the SMTP interface to send email by default. In some situations where interaction with the email client is required, Elliott V8.0 will use MAPI, even if you choose to use SMTP.

Elliott is a 32-bit application. Whenever you need to use MAPI to interact with Outlook, you will need the Outlook in 32-bit as well.  For this reason, we recommend you to install the 32-bit Outlook, instead of the 64-bit version.

When your Outlook is 64-bit and you try to send emails from Elliott, you may experience various error messages because Elliott is a 32-bit application. The following are some examples:

(1) In Elliott V8, when you try to send email from report printing and choose the interactive mode, you can receive the following error:

MAPISendMail failed! A specified attachment was not found [11]

(2) In Elliott 7.5, when you try to send email from report printing and try to pick an email address from your default email client, you can receive the following error:

Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client.
